Ol Kalou Votes in High-Stakes By-Election Seen as Ruto-Gachagua Proxy Fight
Voting opens in Ol Kalou as 73,480 voters choose their MP in a by-election that has become a Ruto vs Gachagua proxy battle for Mt Kenya influence ahead of 2027.
Ol Kalou constituency goes to the polls today with 144 polling stations across five wards. The by-election, triggered by the death of MP David Kiaraho, pits UDA against the Gachagua-aligned DCP. The campaign was marred by bribery allegations, violence, and accusations of state resources being used to sway voters. The outcome will be read as a clear signal of President Ruto's standing in his home Mt Kenya region versus the influence of former DP Rigathi Gachagua, who has broken with the president and formed a rival political vehicle.

xAI Open-Sources Grok Build, Its Rust Coding Agent CLI
xAI released the full Rust source for Grok Build on GitHub, letting the community audit and modify its agentic coding tool.
The repository includes the CLI/TUI runtime and agent harness used by xAI's coding agent. The move follows controversy after security researchers discovered an earlier version was uploading entire git repos to Google Cloud Storage even with data-sharing disabled. Open-sourcing lets the community audit the code directly and aligns with a broader trend of AI labs publishing agent infrastructure, though the leaked-data episode left a trust gap that source code alone may not close.
xAI Sues Grok User for Generating CSAM
xAI filed a federal lawsuit against a South Carolina man accused of bypassing Grok safeguards to create and distribute child sexual abuse material.
The civil suit against Terry Wayne Harwood claims he knowingly used Grok to circumvent safeguards, alter nonconsensual images, and generate and distribute CSAM. Harwood was already arrested in February on separate charges of sexually exploiting minors. xAI is seeking reputational and legal damages. The case follows intense scrutiny over Grok's safety measures and underscores the legal risk AI labs face when users weaponize their models, regardless of safeguards in place.
