Traders protest new KRA container tax benchmark

Small-scale traders demonstrated in Nairobi's Central Business District on August 28, 2026, against the Kenya Revenue Authority's increase of the minimum yield for 40-foot consolidated cargo containers from Sh2.5 million to Sh3.2 million. The traders argue the new benchmark increases their tax burden and could push up consumer goods prices. They called for direct engagement with KRA, rejecting online responses via X (Twitter). Police used tear gas to disperse protesters marching toward Times Tower. KRA describes the Sh3.2 million figure as a risk-management reference under a simplified clearance arrangement, not a flat tax, and says traders can opt for individual verification or de-consolidation if they disagree.
ODPC gives data handlers 14 days to renew expired certificates
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner directed all data controllers and processors with expired registration certificates to renew by September 11, 2026 close of business, facing enforcement action otherwise.
ODPC Commissioner Immaculate Kassait issued a notice on August 28, 2026 giving affected entities 14 days to renew expired registration certificates. The requirement is anchored in Section 18 of the Data Protection Act, 2019, which bars entities from acting as data controllers or processors without valid registration. Certificates are valid for 24 months under the Data Protection (Registration of Data Controllers and Data Processors) Regulations, 2021. Failure to comply may result in enforcement action. Renewal fees vary by entity size: micro/small entities pay Sh2,000, medium entities Sh9,000, large entities Sh25,000, and public entities/charities Sh2,000.

Airtel launches $150M data centre at Tatu City
Airtel Africa broke ground on a $150 million Nxtra data centre at Tatu City SEZ, positioning it as East Africa's largest data centre with 44MW capacity designed for AI and cloud workloads.
Airtel Africa broke ground in September 2025 on its Nxtra by Airtel 44MW data centre at Tatu City Special Economic Zone, with completion targeted for July 2027. The $150 million facility will deliver 44MW of IT power capacity in two 22MW phases, featuring GPU-ready racks, 99.999% uptime, multiple redundant fibre paths, and advanced security systems. Tatu City provides 95% renewable energy, with one-third of demand met directly by solar power. The facility draws from a 135MVA dedicated substation and is positioned as East Africa's data centre hub, potentially ten times larger than existing regional facilities. Airtel confirmed a $1 billion broader Nxtra investment across Africa, valuing the subsidiary at $3.1 billion.
SUN Mobility launches battery swapping ecosystem in Kenya
SUN Mobility and Vivo Energy launched 35 battery swapping stations across Nairobi and Mombasa, enabling electric motorcycles, scooters and tuk-tuks to swap depleted batteries for charged ones, offering 20-35% fuel cost savings.
