Evening: Nairobi traders' tear-gas protest, viaduct progress and Google's AI search squeeze
Nairobi traders shut the CBD in a tear-gas protest over a higher import-value benchmark, while the Kenyatta Avenue viaduct enters its superstructure phase; ODPC gives data handlers a 14-day renewal window; and in tech, Lambda raised $1bn in debt for Nvidia chips and Google now auto-expands AI Overviews.

Police fire tear gas as Nairobi traders shut the CBD over import-duty hike
Small-scale traders closed hundreds of businesses in central Nairobi on Friday and marched to Parliament, prompting police to disperse them with tear gas over a new customs valuation benchmark.
Police fired tear gas at small-scale traders protesting a higher import-duty benchmark that took effect last week. The Kenya Revenue Authority raised the minimum customs reference value for a consolidated 40-foot container from Ksh2.5 million (about $19,320) to Ksh3.2 million (about $24,700), a move it says targets under-declaration and undervaluation that hurt compliant businesses and local manufacturers. Traders say the extra cost lands hardest on those who rely on consolidated shipments to keep import prices down, and hundreds of businesses in the CBD closed for the day. The protest comes amid wider frustration over the cost of living. (Source: Al Jazeera / Reuters, 28 Aug 2026.)
Kenyatta Avenue viaduct enters superstructure phase
The elevated road linking the Nairobi CBD to Upper Hill has moved past its foundations, with piers done and girders now being placed.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said on 27 August that the Kenyatta Avenue viaduct has entered its superstructure phase: reinforced concrete piers and pier caps are complete and precast girders are being laid across them to carry the elevated roadway. The overpass is designed to fly over the Processional Way, Mamlaka Road and Nyerere Road junctions, run past All Saints' Cathedral and end near the Integrity Centre on Jakaya Kikwete Road, linking into traffic towards Ngong Road and Valley Road. It will also include cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways. The project is meant to ease the worst bottlenecks between the CBD and Upper Hill, a corridor that carries heavy commuter and business traffic. (Source: Nairobi Leo, 27 Aug 2026.)
ODPC gives data handlers 14 days to renew expired certificates
The Data Protection Commissioner has given organisations with lapsed registration certificates until 11 September to renew or face enforcement action.
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has given data controllers and processors with expired registration certificates 14 days to regularise their status, with a compliance deadline of 11 September 2026, close of business. The notice, posted on 28 August, is anchored in Section 18 of the Data Protection Act, 2019, which bars entities required to register from acting as data controllers or processors unless registered, and the 2021 regulations that set certificates valid for 24 months. The ODPC says continued processing of personal data after a certificate lapses, without renewal, is an offence, and has published the list of affected entities on its website. Any business in Nairobi that holds customer, staff or tenant data should check the list now. (Sources: The Star, 28 Aug 2026; Capital FM, 29 Aug 2026.)

Neocloud Lambda raises $1bn in debt to buy Nvidia chips for Microsoft
AI cloud firm Lambda secured $1 billion in short-dated private debt to buy Nvidia AI chips it will lease to Microsoft, the latest sign of how heavily the AI build-out leans on borrowing.
Lambda, an AI cloud company that buys GPUs and rents them out, raised $1 billion in private, short-dated debt to purchase Nvidia AI chips it will lease to Microsoft, Bloomberg reported via TechCrunch. The deal was arranged by JP Morgan Chase and follows a $1 billion secured credit facility Lambda closed in May and a $926 million loan this week for Nvidia GB300 GPUs. Bloomberg data cited by TechCrunch puts global AI-related debt raised by banks and tech companies in 2026 so far at over $400 billion. It matters because the compute behind every AI product is now being funded with leverage that assumes chips get deployed and earn revenue fast. (Source: TechCrunch, 28 Aug 2026.)
Google now auto-expands AI Overviews, pushing web links further down
For some searches Google now shows a full AI answer with an 'Ask anything' box by default, shoving the normal list of website links much further down the page.
Google is automatically expanding its AI Overviews for some queries instead of showing a short snippet with a 'Show more' button, as first flagged by Search Engine Roundtable and reported by The Verge. When it triggers, users see a full AI answer plus an 'Ask anything' box before the traditional blue links, meaning more scrolling to reach actual websites. Google says the expansion is dynamic, based on where its systems judge it most useful, and that it cancels if you have already started scrolling so you don't lose your place. The shift matters for anyone who relies on search traffic: publishers and businesses that depend on being found on the open web get pushed down yet again.
