Safaricom Stake Sale to Lift Kenya's Forex Cover to Seven Months
CBK says the Safaricom sale proceeds will push forex reserves to $16 billion, covering seven months of imports.
CBK Governor Kamau Thugge said the government's 15% Safaricom stake sale to Vodacom will boost reserves to nearly $16 billion once the funds land. That's about seven months of import cover, up significantly from the current position. Treasury CS John Mbadi confirmed the government expects over Sh200 billion from the deal, with proceeds deposited into the National Infrastructure Fund held at CBK. Vodafone Kenya Limited, a Vodacom subsidiary, now holds 55% of Safaricom, while the government's stake dropped to 20% from 35%. The remaining 25% stays with public investors.
Seven Insurers Fail to File Returns, Face IRA Scrutiny
Seven insurance firms face regulatory penalties for missing the Q1 2026 reporting deadline to the IRA.
The Insurance Regulatory Authority excluded Definite Assurance Company, Kenyan Alliance Insurance (General and Life), Monarch Insurance (General and Life), Star Discover Micro Insurance, and Birdview Micro Insurance from its quarterly report for failing to submit returns. The missing data covers premiums received, claims paid, and other operational metrics that the IRA uses to monitor financial health. Separately, Continental Reinsurance Plc Life was excluded because it ceased operations at end of 2025, not for non-compliance. The sector overall posted strong Q1 numbers: gross written premiums rose 19.9% to Sh155.3 billion and net profit jumped 43.3%.
Digital Lenders Say KRA Tax Dispute Still Clouds Investment Outlook
Digital lenders warn an unresolved High Court appeal over historical tax claims continues to scare off investment despite some legislative wins.
The Digital Financial Services Association of Kenya says a High Court appeal over KRA tax claims dating back to December 2022 remains active, with the next hearing in September. The Finance Act adopted several industry-backed reforms: the proposed 60% deemed dividend tax on retained earnings was dropped, tax incentives for locally assembled smartphones were retained, and bad debt deductibility for lenders was enhanced. But DFSAK says the litigation and continued KRA scrutiny of retained earnings means the tax environment is still unsettled. The association represents 35 licensed digital credit providers serving millions of Kenyans.
Kenya Ships First Premium Coffee Consignment to Italy
Kenya dispatched its first direct shipment of premium green coffee beans to Italy's Trieste Port, targeting higher export earnings.
The inaugural 20-container shipment was exported by Sumseron Coffee & Tea Limited and flagged off at Mitchell Cotts by Trade PS Regina Ombam and Cooperatives PS Patrick Kilemi. The government said the direct Italy route is part of a broader push to diversify export destinations away from traditional markets and boost farmer earnings. Other targets in the pipeline include China under the Early Harvest Arrangement, Japan, Algeria, and Kazakhstan. Kenya is also leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area to expand intra-African coffee trade.

Starlink V5 Dish Launches: 63% Lighter, Half the Power Draw
SpaceX shipped the Starlink V5 dish weighing 2.4 lbs with 35-50W power consumption, down from 6.5 lbs and 75-100W.
SpaceX quietly launched the Starlink V5 residential dish in select areas. The new terminal weighs just 2.4 pounds versus the V4's 6.5 pounds and draws 35 to 50 watts, less than half the V4's 75 to 100 watts. There is no speed increase -- still up to 375+ Mbps -- but the smaller footprint, lower power, and simpler logistics make it significantly more practical for off-grid and portable use. The V5 is not intended for in-motion use. SpaceX says production will ramp to meet global demand, which matters for rural connectivity in markets like Kenya where Starlink is already rolling out.
OpenAI Researcher Miles Wang Launching $2B AI Drug Discovery Startup
OpenAI researcher Miles Wang is leaving to start an AI drug discovery company, targeting a $200 million raise at a $2 billion valuation.
Miles Wang, an OpenAI researcher whose work focused on AI for scientific and biological discovery, is in talks to launch a drug discovery startup with a roughly $200 million funding round at a $2 billion valuation. Lightspeed is reported to be in discussions to lead the round. Other OpenAI employees may join the venture. The deal signals that investor appetite for applying AI to life sciences remains strong despite the broader frothiness in AI startup valuations. Wang joined OpenAI in 2024 after leaving Harvard.
