Wednesday: Gigiri outage, Eastleigh count narrows and SIM-swap risk rises
Part of Gigiri loses power today, while Eastleigh rescuers have narrowed the missing list to 20. Safaricom's latest fraud report gives M-Pesa users a reason to lock SIM replacements, and confirmed exploitation makes last week's PHP patch urgent.

Gigiri power cut runs from 9am to 5pm today
The Canadian and Rwanda embassies, KTTC campus, Rubis at the UN junction and adjacent customers are affected.
Kenya Power says the eight-hour interruption is planned maintenance. The affected area is narrow, but it includes diplomatic offices, the KTTC campus and the UN junction fuel station. Charge devices before 9am and expect card, Wi-Fi and access-control problems at nearby premises.
Eastleigh search narrows missing list from 52 to 20
Kenya Red Cross traced and reunited 32 people with their families; 20 remain unaccounted for.
This does not mean 32 people were pulled from the rubble. Officials said the initial list came from relatives who thought loved ones were inside. By Tuesday evening, the operation was about 65 percent complete and teams had not reported a fresh rescue since the second day. The lower count is good news, but the site remains an active rescue operation.
Safaricom fraud report sharpens the SIM-swap warning
The telco dismissed 118 staff over fraud and recovered Sh953 million in inflated agent commissions in the year to March.
The report is new, though its figures cover the year ended March. Safaricom also said its View360 checks cut fraudulent SIM swaps by 65 percent. Business Daily, citing Interpol, reported Kenyan SIM-swap losses of Sh491.6 million and a 327 percent rise last year. Whitelist your number so a replacement can only happen at a Safaricom shop or care desk. If your line suddenly loses service, contact Safaricom and your bank at once.
Tech
PHP bugs are now being exploited
CISA added both PHP2Shell flaws to its exploited-vulnerability catalogue after attackers began targeting unpatched systems.
This is the material change since last week's patch alert. CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 allow unauthenticated remote code execution on web-facing PHP systems. Update to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35. Unsupported PHP 8.1 and older systems should come off the internet until they are replaced or isolated. Check logs for PHP workers spawning shells or downloading tools.
