Treasury misses tax revenue target by nearly Sh7bn
Kenya's tax revenue for FY2025/26 fell Sh7bn short of the revised target as manufacturing carried the load.
Treasury data shows tax revenue hit Sh2.450 trillion as of June 30 against a revised target of Sh2.457 trillion, a Sh7 billion shortfall. KRA collected Sh2.84 trillion in total revenue, up 10.6% from last year. Manufacturing contributed the most at Sh462 billion. External borrowing stood at Sh1.297 trillion, domestic at Sh697.5 billion. The miss means the government either cuts spending or leans harder on borrowing to close the gap.
China zero-tariff access opens new path for Kenyan exporters
China's zero-tariff policy on 100% of tariff lines for 53 African countries gives Kenyan tea, coffee, avocados, and leather duty-free access to the world's second-largest economy.
The policy took effect May 1 and grants duty-free access on all tariff lines to exports from 53 African countries with diplomatic ties to Beijing, extending beyond least-developed economies to include middle-income Kenya. In 2025, Kenya's exports to China sat around $197 million against imports of Sh489 billion, a gap the deal targets directly. First consignments have already landed at Xiamen port. The question now is whether local producers can meet China's quality and volume requirements at scale.
Coffee revival gathers pace as 6 western counties chart sector recovery
Six western Kenya counties are pushing a coffee revival under a programme that lets cooperatives retain 20% of sale proceeds for operations.
Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Vihiga, and Kakamega are among the counties charting recovery under the Coffee Revival Through Cooperative Societies Programme. Under the proposed model, 20% of coffee sale proceeds would be retained by cooperatives to support operations, with farmers keeping the rest. The programme, launched by President Ruto in June, aims to expand coffee cultivation to 35 counties and marks western Kenya as a new frontier for a crop historically dominated by the central region.

Deezer said AI-generated track uploads peaked at a monthly average of 90,000 per day in June 2026, crossing the 50% threshold for the first time. Despite the flood, AI tracks account for just 1-3% of total listener streams, meaning audiences still overwhelmingly prefer human-made music. The data highlights a growing supply-demand gap that streaming services are wrestling with as they decide how much AI music to host, how to label it, and whether to pay different royalty rates.
Alibaba releases Qwen-Image-3.0 without benchmarks or weights
Alibaba's Qwen team released its third-gen image generation model with 4,500-token prompts and legible text rendering, but skipped benchmarks and model weights.
Qwen-Image-3.0 launched July 21 with support for 4,500-token input prompts, letting users describe complex scenes in a single pass. The model can render legible text down to 10px and handles 12 languages, making it practical for document and UI generation. But the release includes no benchmark scores, model card, or technical report, and no open weights were published, a departure from previous Qwen-Image releases. The model is accessible via Qwen's API, leaving open-source fans waiting.
