Thika gets Senate committee nod to become Kenya sixth city
Senate devolution committee endorsed Thika elevation to city status, paving the way for Kiambu industrial hub to become Kenya sixth city.
The Senate Standing Committee on Devolution recommended Thika Municipality be granted city status, citing infrastructure readiness and a population exceeding 350,000. Thika, home to more than 1,000 industries, would become Kenya sixth city and the first urban centre in Central Kenya to receive the designation. Governor Wamatangi has 90 days to submit detailed work plans. The full Senate and President must still give final approval.
Dangote Sh2.59tn Lamu refinery runs into land and environmental resistance
Greenpeace and local communities are pushing back against the proposed $17 billion refinery in Lamu over ecosystem risks and inadequate public participation.
Greenpeace Africa has called for a halt to Dangote Industries planned 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Lamu, warning it threatens one of the most fragile coastal ecosystems in the region and would lock Kenya into decades of fossil fuel dependence. Local communities also cite inadequate public consultation, unresolved land compensation, and a lack of transparency over the investment terms. The project, connected to an 800km Lokichar-Lamu pipeline, is the single largest industrial investment ever proposed for Kenya.
Kiambu launches phase 2 of Maji Nyumbani water project targeting 100,000 new connections
Kiambu County began laying 120km of water pipelines in phase two of the program, aiming to connect 100,000 additional households across the county.
Governor Wamatangi launched the second phase of the Maji Nyumbani water connectivity initiative, which will see over 120 kilometres of new pipelines laid across Kiambu. The program targets 100,000 new household connections through equitable distribution across all regions, building on the county existing 400km water network. The expansion addresses rapid urbanization in areas underserved by municipal water infrastructure.

Claude Code has been shipping with Rust-based Bun for a month and nobody noticed
Anthropic Claude Code silently switched from the Zig Bun implementation to a Rust port in June, getting 10% faster Linux startup with zero user-facing disruption.
Claude Code v2.1.181, released June 17, replaced the Zig implementation of Bun with a Rust port. The rewrite, which spans over a million lines, was itself written by Claude Code over nine days. Jarred Sumner confirmed the switch on July 19, noting the Rust build starts 10% faster on Linux. Simon Willison documented the change and highlighted the broader lesson: the best infrastructure upgrades are invisible. Nineteen regressions surfaced post-merge but all have been fixed.
OpenAI cuts Codex context window to 272K tokens after regression fix
OpenAI fixed a bundled instruction configuration that restored the GPT-5.6 Codex context window to 272K tokens, below the 372K some users were getting.
A pull request in the openai/codex repository shows Codex now caps the context window for GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna at 272,000 tokens. Users on ChatGPT authentication were previously experiencing a roughly 372K window before the fix reverted the models to their documented higher-usage tier. The change highlights a recurring tension between OpenAI advertised 1.05M context for GPT-5.6 and what Codex users can actually access in practice.
