Sunday: Salama crash, tighter lender rules and the SHA switch
A deadly highway crash sharpens the warning for Sunday drivers, while new lending rules and hospital-system changes could affect borrowing and care.

Seventeen killed at Salama black spot
A failed overtaking attempt triggered a multi-vehicle crash on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway; NTSA says the Mlima Kiu-Salama section is a known black spot.
Police said a truck tried to overtake another shortly after midnight on Saturday and hit several vehicles, including a minibus carrying pilgrims. The driver and 16 passengers died. NTSA urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and keep lane discipline. If you are using the A8 Nairobi-Mombasa corridor today, slow down around Mlima Kiu-Salama and do not force overtakes.
CBK sharply raises fees for non-bank lenders
New regulations lift application fees from Sh5,000 to Sh100,000 and annual fees as high as Sh500,000, with a Sh1 million late-payment penalty.
The rules cover non-deposit-taking credit providers, the wider category replacing digital-credit providers. Licensed firms will pay Sh500,000 a year and registered firms Sh250,000. Providers will also need CBK approval before launching or changing a product, including its interest rate, and must give customers 30 days' notice of approved changes. Borrowers get stronger controls over marketing, personal data and debt recovery, but higher compliance costs could reduce the number of small lenders or feed into prices. Check the full cost of credit and use a CBK-authorised provider.
Hospital SHA claims are moving into HMIS
Hospitals are replacing double entry in the SHA portal with linked hospital systems; remaining Level 6 facilities have until October 30 to finish the transition.
Health CS Aden Duale says each hospital's Health Management Information System will become the main system, with data flowing into SHA and other health platforms. The aim is to cut repeated data entry, queues and claims delays. Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital are expected to switch in the coming days, while other Level 6 facilities have until October 30. This is mainly a provider-side change. Keep your SHA details and any receipts or reference numbers in case a facility has temporary integration problems.
Nairobi West demolition dispute moves to site inspection
A tribunal ordered a site verification after residents said demolition work continued despite an injunction protecting apartments housing at least 50 families.
The dispute concerns Willow Court apartments on LR 37/750 beside the Ngong River. Residents say sections of boundary walls and concrete flooring were broken this week, exposing a ditch and increasing flood and access risks. The Water Resources Authority told the tribunal it will conduct a joint inspection before filing its response. If you own or rent near a riparian corridor, retain copies of approvals, notices and any tribunal or court orders; this case remains unresolved.
