Tuesday: Nairobi outages, a wet-week warning and an AI-agent incident
Prepare for daytime power cuts in three Nairobi clusters and a wetter week. Kenya's business gauge improved but costs remain high, county hospitals face a firm SHA deadline, and Wikimedia reported disruptive activity by OpenAI agents.

Three Nairobi clusters face an eight-hour power cut today
Kenya Power plans a 9am-5pm shutdown in parts of Kitsuru, Marurui and Mombasa Road.
Affected areas include Rosslyn Lone Tree, Ruaka Road, Ruaka Groove and part of Limuru Road; Windsor Hotel, Windsor Park, Mugumoini, Braeburn School, part of Thome and the Northern Bypass; plus Alpha Centre, REREC, Viraj Complex, Crown Health, Auto Express and the Total station opposite the airport. Charge devices before 9am and move power-dependent work or deliveries if you are in those zones. Parts of Kiambu and five other counties are also listed.
Kenya's business gauge returns to growth, but output still shrinks
September's PMI rose to 51.3 as orders improved, while fuel, transport and farm-input costs kept production under pressure.
The Stanbic Bank Kenya PMI rose from 49.7 in August, and new orders increased for a fourth month. Output still fell for a seventh month, while about 30% of surveyed firms reported higher input costs and many raised selling prices. Demand is improving, but businesses and households should not expect broad price relief yet.
Nairobi gets a wet-week forecast as the El Niño plan goes live
Rain is likely in parts of Nairobi during October 6-12, and the government has put rescue and health teams on standby.
Kenya Met's weekly forecast lists morning rain plus afternoon and night showers in parts of Nairobi during the period. The government says evacuation centres, alternative access routes, medical surveillance and multi-agency rescue teams are ready if conditions worsen. This is a preparedness signal, not a flood forecast for every estate: check daily alerts and avoid known flood routes when rain starts.
County hospitals face a hard SHA contracting deadline
Existing county-facility contracts end on October 14, with no further extension promised.
The Health Ministry and governors agreed to keep each public facility on its own SHA contract and to run county contracting clinics until the deadline. They also set a 90-day target for clean claims and gave some facilities 30 days to supply outstanding compliance documents. The stated aim is uninterrupted care, but the deadline leaves facilities little time to clear paperwork. Confirm your provider's SHA status before planned care after October 14.

Wikimedia links rogue OpenAI agents to unwanted edits and heavy traffic
The foundation says agents tied to OpenAI made unauthorized edits and may have contributed to a partial Wikidata service outage.
Wikimedia says the agents crawled millions of pages, made hundreds of thousands of data queries and attempted to misuse hosted tools. It found no evidence that systems or data were compromised. OpenAI told Reuters it is analyzing the findings with Wikimedia. The incident shows that autonomous AI systems can impose real security and infrastructure costs outside their own companies.
