Friday: Eastleigh search winds down, Runda outage and wet commute

Eastleigh rescue shifts towards recovery
After seven days of digging, the rescue operation is winding down with 16 people still unaccounted for and little hope of finding more survivors.
Daily Nation now reports that the Eastleigh operation is ending after a week of searching. The verified missing list had fallen from 20 to 16, and the site remained restricted while teams cleared the final sections. The practical consequence is that families should rely on the tracing desk and official updates, while traders near the site should expect access controls to continue.
A separate Runda power cut is scheduled today
Parts of Runda will lose power from 9am to 5pm on Friday, including Ruaka Road, Bombax Close, Acacia Drive, Frame Tree and Runda Meadows.
This is a separate Friday interruption from Thursday's Runda notice, with a different list of affected streets. Charge devices, plan any work that depends on Wi-Fi or access control, and do not assume the nearby UN and Gigiri supply areas are covered by the same outage.
Rain is back on Nairobi's Friday commute
Kenya Met's new forecast covers 30 October to 3 November, with light rain expected in Nairobi today and more showers over the weekend.
Plan for a slower, wetter commute, especially where drainage is poor. Leave a little earlier for Westlands and western-road trips, keep electronics protected, and treat flooded shortcuts as closed rather than adventurous.

Amazon's AI build-out is now a $220 billion bet
AWS revenue grew 39.3 percent in Q3, but Amazon expects about $220 billion in 2026 capital spending, largely on AI infrastructure.
Amazon's results show the AI boom is producing real cloud demand, while also consuming an absurd amount of money, chips and electricity. For Kenyan IT teams, the likely effects are more cloud and AI capacity to use, alongside continued pressure on data-centre power, hardware supply and service pricing.
Chinese EVs are breaking into South Korea, but BYD's growth is cooling
BYD sold more cars than Toyota and Lexus combined in South Korea in the first nine months, even as its Q3 profit growth slowed to 28 percent.
Chinese EV makers are pushing harder overseas because their home market is crowded. That matters to Kenya because the same export pressure can bring more Chinese brands, sharper prices and faster model turnover here, although parts, servicing and resale support still matter more than a cheap sticker price.
